Main Applications of THF
01.PTMEG is used to manufacture spandex elastic fabrics, which represents the largest application of THF.
Tetrahydrofuran (THF) undergoes cationic ring‑opening polymerization to produce polytetramethylene ether glycol, known as PTMEG. As a core soft‑segment raw material, PTMEG is further polymerized to make polyurethane, which is then spun into spandex fiber. Thanks to its excellent elastic recovery property, spandex is widely blended into fabrics for underwear and sportswear, endowing textiles with good stretch and rebound performance.
02.Dissolution‑bonding Principle of THF for PVC Adhesive
Tetrahydrofuran (THF) has an extremely strong dissolving capacity for PVC resin. It can rapidly swell and dissolve PVC resin and is widely used in industry as the main solvent for PVC‑bonding adhesives. In the PVC‑adhesive system, THF dissolves PVC resin to form glue liquid by its powerful solvency. After the glue is applied to the joint of PVC pipes and fittings, the solvent volatilizes quickly. The dissolved PVC resin re‑solidifies and fuses the surfaces of two PVC substrates together, achieving firm bonding between pipes and fittings.
