Application

1 Polycarbonate (PC) Production
BPA is the primary monomer for manufacturing polycarbonate plastics, accounting for approximately 64% of global BPA demand. Polycarbonate offers high transparency, excellent impact strength, and heat resistance, making it suitable for applications such as optical media (DVDs/CDs), automotive parts, electrical components, and various consumer goods.

2 Epoxy Resins
As the second-largest application, BPA is a key raw material for epoxy resins, representing roughly 30% of total BPA consumption. These resins are widely used in protective coatings for food and beverage cans, industrial coatings, laminates, adhesives, and water infrastructure components such as pipes and fittings.

3 Flame Retardants
BPA serves as a precursor for tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a widely used flame retardant. Approximately 90% of TBBPA is consumed as a reactive intermediate in the production of flame-retarded epoxy and polycarbonate resins, with the remainder used as an additive in materials such as ABS resins.

4 Thermal Paper
BPA functions as a color developer in thermal paper used for receipts, tickets, and labels. When exposed to heat, it triggers color formation in the paper coating. Note that regulatory restrictions on BPA in thermal paper have been implemented in some regions, including the EU.

5 Other Applications
Additional uses include the production of other polymers and resins (such as phenolic resins and unsaturated polyesters), as an antioxidant in PVC processing, in the manufacture of cyanate esters for aerospace composites, and as a laboratory reagent.
